Dear Street Photography afficionados,


We at the The-Yard-Collective are happy to introduce you our new gallery: The LightHouse!

Every month a group of three of our moderators, ActiveShooter, MARX77 and kingmouf will pick a number of notable photos from Yard's galleries and propose them to all moderators. After a voting process, the top three photos will be featured in the LightHouse Gallery.

After the selection process, we will present those photos with a comment from the gallery's curators.

So 'nough with the talking and let's present you the first.. four... selections for the gallery! A tie in the voting process forced us to accept more photos this time. The photos will be presented in no particular order.










ActiveShooter : " Superb observation skills and timing to get this one! The colour and the exposure for highlights make this a stand out shot."

MARX77 :  " Sharply lit, unbalanced, awkward and hurried photo, that entices you with a sudden burst of Rudhira (Sanskrit for red) in a cold, emotionless scene.
If you, like me are easily seduced by this color, look again. This is not just a photograph, this is a photograph which cunningly draws you in closer just so it can take a better look at you.
Put your hands inside your pockets as well good Sir/Madam, you've just witnessed Street photography at it's finest!"

kingmouf : "I always find that the black and white images are easier to make. By removing the element of color, you can simply focus on the moment, interactions, feelings that happen to be present on a scene. Color just makes everything more complicated since in order to make an excellent picture all that applies for b&w has to apply as well and on top of that you have to make sure that color not only does not break this but enhances it. You simply cannot be driven by action/moment, you are also driven by color.

This photo demonstrates an excellent use of color. I'm not a fan of those deep contrast photos, but here the figures just pop out of the dark in all the great places and the color is simply dreamy!

The mirror is an incredible element, used exceptionally. It backfires everything to the viewer, making him part of the scene, as it marks the center of interest in the viewer's plane and not in the viewed plane. "









ActiveShooter : " What I love about this is that it could easily have been a very ordinary scene. But it is taken into the realms of the extraordinary. I can not only smell the street I can feel the pulsating energy of the city."

MARX77 :  " An instant classic that showcases not only what Street photography is all about, but it also displays the exceptional talent of this brilliant photographer.
A photo that could turn even those old master Street photographers green - or monochrome with envy."

kingmouf : "I dont believe that there has ever been a photographer doing street photography without having heard the words "decisive instant". It is the moment that everything seems to be in the right place to make an ordinary scene extraordinary.

Take this photo for example. It's just people waking up a stairs. And then magically for a fraction of a second a couple of pigeons simply cross in a different diagonal the frame and pop! Magic happens!

I really like the capture of the movement and I also really like the levels created in the photo that the pigeons give. It's just not another flat image of people against a wall."









ActiveShooter : " A wonderful example of great composition and colour and the passer-by captured at just the right moment to complete the scene."

MARX77 :  " Great composition, great lighting and really, really great timing! But is it Street photography?
Took me little while getting used to, but as I kept coming back to it, I began to appreciate the intricacies of the shot - like how the two heads (the person's and his shadow's) are neatly framed by the rectagular tiles on the wall, the 'one, two, one' movement, etc. There's a certain rhythm about this image - a silent music that you cannot hear, only feel....

But again, is it Street photography?
Hell, yeah!!!"

kingmouf : "At first glance, this photo just seemed ...right. Really nice color balance, a well composed frame, catchy.

But then you start looking a little bit more carefully and you are kinda puzzled and then wowed! It's like a continuum, a cose play between the actual objects and their shadows. A brilliantly conceptual piece, which initiates and triggers the viewer. The game of the non-obvious and the story behind it.

I think it represents in a perfect way the marriage of street photography with conceptual art."









ActiveShooter : " This photo speaks to me of the loneliness of the city. All the people are in their own little worlds, together but alone. The isolated hand and head add greatly to the scene, where is the reflected woman going, what is she thinking?"

MARX77 :  "Now this is the image which I believe, the legendary science fiction novelist, Philip K. Dick must've imagined as he wrote his masterpiece novel, 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'.
I look at this and I can't help but think of that amazing Ridley Scott directed, 1982 neo-noir film, Blade Runner, which was also loosely based on the novel.
Funny how a mere reflection on a window can turn an ordinary shot into an extraordinary one. Props to the immensly talented photographer!"

kingmouf : "Good photographs for me have a strong element of time. It has nothing to do with the time the shutter is released. No. It has to do with the time it manages to capture one's attention. That is why I generally like more complicated images, images that choose to subtract rather than add everything and provide an easy solution to the viewer. The art of non-obvious.

When I first looked at this photo, it kinda puzzled me and I thought that it was something of a double-exposure or whatever digital equivalent. However, the positioning of the different elements in the photo made me look and look and look again till I realized it was a reflection. I had to solve the puzzle! The photo was already a winner. How brilliantly the photographer managed to see and capture this wonderful juxtaposition between the element of the real world and the one reflected! It's like a divine intervention, a secret communication between those two women. Excellent!!

(P.S. A while ago The Yard launched a gallery called "Premium Selection". Only the best went in to it. However we immediatly started a lengthy discussion amongst the Admins about the selection process after it was launched and the whole thing came to a stand still. So time went by and it we ended up changing the name to the "LightHouse Gallery*", as well as putting together a Curator team with a much enhanced mode of operandis. /Pelle)

*myraincheck proposed the name as a joke, but we all ended up loving it. I guess we are all a bunch of sorry Emos.
