THE FIRST LEG OF THE REGATTA

We have already received a few entries into the competition. And why not? If you just know it will be one of your three strongest pictures than why wait! Well perhaps because you in fact will shoot better ones in the two months to come! And once you make an entry it stays there. When you make an entry, send it it as a JPEG or PNG to contest@the-yard-collective.com

Remember that your entry will be anonymous as far as the judges go, but when submitting your entry please include your dA nickname in the email as well as your real name. Please also bear in mind that the image has got to be a minimum of 900px wide for landscape orientations, and 600px wide for portrait orientations. More info can be found on The Yards front page.

Today we will also provide some feedback from our first mentorship around and also announce a second one. We will also feature the best images from The Edge Gallery from the last month and also get to know a Yard member somewhat better via a PhotoJazz Five interview by Brian Q. Webb, who today features Mr. Yard Collective himself, Stamatis!

TIME TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL!

(By Mary myraincheck, our Mentorship Program Coordinator with a report)

As we move into late September, schools are open again and kids are hitting the books. Also the Yard Collective's own ”educational program” reopens with a new round of mentorships. If you are interested in participating, please send a note to myraincheck . You can apply as mentee and be followed and tutored by a fellow street photographer. Or you can apply as mentor, following and giving directions to a less experienced street photographer. You can apply to both the positions, and you can rejoin even if you already took part to the program. Read more on the group front page.

A 'thank you' feature for the members that have taken part in the program so far:

PHOTOJAZZ FIVE

The PhotoJazz 5 are five questions posed to and 5 photos from a street photographer. The man behind the Questions is Brian Q. Webb bQw, a former Moderator of dA's Street Gallery and long time member of The Yard.

To his blog www.photojazz.ws/

This next to be featured street photographer hails from the home of the great Mount Olympus, the Olympic games first held at the foot of that mountain, the Olympians that live at the top of the mountain, and an economy that is bringing down the entire EU…umm…in a ‘Herculean manner’? StamatisGR is a graphic designer eng.grafis.gr/index.html from Athens, Greece whose favorite hobby is photographing his native home. And he does it very well. Just take a look.

IN ONE BRIEF STATEMENT, DEFINE STREET PHOTOGRAPHY.
Street photography for me is whatever human situation, action or reaction catches my eye while wandering out in the streets and I feel I need to capture it.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE (WHAT DEFINES YOUR VISUAL 'UNIQUENESS')
Some have told me that they recognise my style from miles away. I was very impressed when I first heard it. I don’t think I have a visual “uniqueness” and I don’t consider myself as a “serious” street photographer. What I do, I do it for fun.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO STREET PHOTOGRAPHY?
Back in the 80's I used to take long walks in the city, carrying my Praktica MTL5 (and later BX20) camera and few rolls of film. I clicked on scenes that looked interesting and after printing the photos I always found 3 or 4 frames per film roll, that were special for me. Back then, I didn’t even know the term “street photography”. It was just photography and it was fun. Then came the digital era and the opportunity to experiment and click with zero cost, without having to wait for a week to see the results. And I joined dA. Eliza-mac Elizamac suggested one of my street pictures for a DD which was featured by you. This brought a wave of attention to my pictures and made me curious. So I got into street photography and started learning more about the genre. A little time later, along with 4 more friends we made the Yard club. A great “street” school!

WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR WORK?
My city!
Other than that, my interest on people and the stories they carry on their backs, the neglected beauty of ordinary everyday scenes, funny situations that usually happen in a fraction of a second and no one else notices, human feelings, human conditions that make me think, a sense of geometry and above all my mood while going out shooting. I rarely stand still and wait for a scene to happen, I never “plan” a scene. Sometimes I shoot while still walking.

WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 STREET TOGS?
Can’t mention names. There are too many to remember. I do remember though certain photographs (a lot of them) that have made me love the genre even more. They don’t have to be shot from famous photographers. They just need to be able to talk to my heart through my eyes. Like this one facweb.cs.depaul.edu/sgrais/im… for example.

My sincerest thanks to Stam for taking the time to do this interview. You can see more of his photography on his WordPress blog stamatisgr.wordpress.com/.
